Teenagers in general can be difficult for any parent to deal with every day, but for those with teens who are particularly troubled, the experience can be extra stressful for parents. Getting help for troubled teens is the first thing on every parent’s mind. There are many options that a parent can explore and determine what type of situation would best help their teen through their issues and send them back on the other side a more content person.

The first step in getting help for troubled teen is for the parents to put the child into a therapy program. The parents should speak with the guidance counselor at the teen’s school for recommendations for therapists. This option is one of the least expensive options and can be the first step in determining the right course of action for your troubled teen. This step may also include taking medication to help control their depression or other issues.

Once this step has been tried, if it fails, there are other options. Parents can enroll their child in boot camps or alternative summer camps. Boot camps are aimed more towards those with defiance issues and are incredibly strict. Alternative summer camps are for those with a wide range of issues from mental disorders to stress related issues. These camps are more like typical summer camps with slight differences. The counselors are specially trained to deal with many types of issues that may arise and there are therapy sessions and special activities to get help for troubled teens and get them on the right track.

Getting help for troubled teens becomes easier once you have determined what exactly the problem your teen is dealing with is. These problems can be anything from depression (and other mental and emotional disorders) to alcohol or drug abuse to anger issues. Different options will work better with different problems. For instance, sending a teen with depression to a boot camp where the instructor will yell in his face and constantly tell him that he isn’t doing well enough will only make the depression deeper, while sending that same teen to a special summer camp where there are therapy sessions and fun activities would probably help him to realize that he’s not alone and feel at least a little bit better about himself. Picking the right solution to get help for your troubled teen is very important.

Five Things You Should Explain To Adhd Teens

Back to articles list

ADHD teens are pretty difficult to handle; if you are one of the parents that has to deal with and ADHD son or daughter, it is important to understand that you can’t do it all by yourself. ADHD teens need special therapy, even if they get as much attention as possible at home. Of course, you will work closely with his therapist, because in the case of a person that has been diagnosed with ADHD only few hours with a therapist won’t be enough; even if it’s a big help, without the constant support of their family ADHD teens can easily slip.

So what should we all try to teach our sons, in case that they are dealing with such a problem? Therapists generally say that there are five things an ADHD teen should be taught. First, ADHD teens should be guided and trained to recognize general problems, and, more important, to find ways for solving them. The therapist will be able to show your son some very easy techniques that could help him with this problem.

Second, we all know how difficult it is for ADHD teens to cope with their impulsiveness and their anxieties. This is why it is really important to teach them how to gain more self control, how to restrain themselves from acting without thinking and so on. This will be very helpful, as they will learn how to cope with people around them without so many problems.

A third idea they will have to learn is how to respect the others and others’ property, but also how to respect themselves. Without self esteem they would be lost, as nothing matters more than having confidence in your own powers. This will also help them with the next problem, that of closely monitoring their thoughts, thus learning how to gain control.

A fifth problem ADHD teens should be thought how to deal with is the way they should treat the others. Moral concepts should be slowly explained, the value of interpersonal relationships.

Discovering ADHD As Early As Possible

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurological disorder that affects about 5 percent of the population. It’s more likely to appear in childhood and it’s manifested by the following symptoms: hyperactivity, forgetfulness, poor impulse control and distractibility. There is no medical cure for people that suffer from ADHD.

ADHD teens are more likely to be diagnosed then adults. But in the last year the number of adults with ADHD has grown. About 60% of ADHD teens retain the disorder when passing into adulthood. Recent studies have shown that the disorder is heritable and it has a lot to do with genetics. There are some procedures that can help ADHD teens. Counseling, therapy, behavior modification and other methods can be used with great results. Unlike other mental disorders, ADHD symptoms may be considered normal and don’t seem to affect the individual who is experiencing them. But ADHD teens or people that have the disorder since they were kids have difficulties in studying or evolving properly.

ADHD has been classified as a neurodevelopment disorder. They neurological nature is represented by the lack of impulse control of ADHD teens. They suffer from slow evolution in self control. A person that has ADHD must meet six of the following criteria’s in at least six months: careless mistakes, lack of attention, forgetfulness, avoidance of mental effort or often loss of things. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention a diagnosis of ADHD can only be given by a trained health care provider. Even if some people experience with ADHD symptoms, they can also be related to another disease, such as hyperthyroidism.

Adults are harder to be diagnosed then ADHD teens. But their symptoms must be present before the age of seven. Unlike ADHD teens, adults meet the lack of attention more often and hyperactivity symptoms are rare. They have trouble with self control or self motivation and they need to fight harder to overcome the disorder. More then 20% of ADHD teens also suffer from a learning disorder. This means that they encounter difficulties when they try to learn.

The cause of the disorder is unknown, but in most cases it appears genetically. Most of the studies can only find differences between normal people and those who suffer from the syndrome: such as lower glucose metabolism or lower levels of dopamine for ADHD teens. The patients have a deficit of activity in the premotor cortex and the superior frontal cortex. But not all cases appear genetically. ADHD can also appear from complications during a pregnancy, premature birth, from alcohol consume, tobacco smoke or other environmental factors. If a person suffers damage in the frontal lobs, he can experience the same symptoms encounter in ADHD.

ADHD teens can have a chance in treating the disorder. It can be done with medication, psychotherapy or a mix between the two. The symptoms must be found when the patient is still a child and they mostly consist of slow emotional evolution or low progress at school. Although there is no know way to prevent ADHD, there is a higher risk of it appearing if the mother smokes during pregnancy. So the best way to prevent it is by avoiding cigars and alcohol during pregnancy.

Finding Help for Teens

When troubled teens find themselves in a place that is dark and unhappy, they often do not want to get help or they do not know how to go about getting the help that they need. They often see these issues as just a part of growing up and they do not learn to deal with them properly. Teens may also think that there is no one who can help them. They think their parents don’t understand and no one else can possibly know what they are going through at this time. But there are so many options that a teen can utilize to get help.

Teen help is by no means hard to come by. Crisis phone lines are available 24/7 for teens to call just to have someone to talk to. In most cases, these calls are totally anonymous so the teen can feel safe talking about their problems to someone who does not know them and will not judge them. Teen help lines are designed to let teens just talk it out and if there is further help needed, they are trained to give suggestions to the teen as to how to get further help.

The internet also offers teen help forums where teens can chat with other teens that might be going through the very same issues. They can swap stories and share solutions that have worked for them in the past that others may find useful. A lot of times with teens, just knowing that others are feeling the same way can make a huge difference in how they react to such situations. Also just having an anonymous place to vent and not being told they shouldn’t say things like that or shouldn’t be feeling that way can be a great outlet.

Local support groups are also available for troubled teen help. They can get together with other teens that are more local and possibly make new friends. They will likely find friends that are going through the same or similar issues. Sometimes just having someone who knows what it’s like can be a big help. Also, a trained counselor usually sits in on these sessions so that if there are any questions or concerns, he or she can help to mediate. The counselor will also likely take notes and will be held responsible for reporting any dangerous activity or anything else of concern.

Many people still think that a military boarding school is reserved for troubledteens. But nowadays the military boarding school has changed its mission, and has become a great institution that fosters learning and growth in young people through discipline and hard work. The aim of a military boarding school is to create young leaders who have confidence, self-respect and responsibility.

Generally any military boarding school will still use principles of dedication, teamwork and discipline as a methodology for motivating youngsters. The students of a military boarding school will have to live in barracks and they will all do their own work including cleaning and washing. This will instill a sense of responsibility, and the regular activities are different at a military boarding school. There is a lot more importance given to sports and outdoor activities which are important for the development of young bodies. Study time is limited to specific hours, but a military boarding school will give as much importance to academics as regular schools do. In a military boarding school students are taught the value of rewards given for accomplishments and also learn from the punishments meted out because of any diversions. This helps to make them self-motivated individuals determined to achieve the best in life through determination and hard work.

A military boarding school is for students from 7th grade to 12th grade. A military boarding school will have rigorous academic programs, punctuated by arts programs, athletic development and a proper military training. Students will learn English, math, science, geography/world cultures, health and physical education, algebra, and foreign languages like Spanish or French. Physical development is given a lot of importance through sports that will encourage teamwork. Other activities will include training in computer and web technologies, film appreciation, first aid, model rocketry, archery, surfing, sailing, scuba diving, publication and performing arts. Most military boarding schools also encourage spiritual development through regular chapel prayers.

Even though the cause of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is still relatively unknown, it affects nearly ten percent of all school age children in the United States today. Research has shown that ADHD teenshave less activity than normal in the areas of the brain that control their attention. This disorder is almost always accompanied by some form of learning disability as well and it is usually diagnosed before the age of seven.

There have been many arguments about the main cause of this disorder, ranging from the genetics of the child to their diet. The treatments for ADHD teens are also being questioned. While some doctors say that the only way to treat ADHD is through a combination of counseling and medication, others say that a change in the child’s diet is enough to effectively treat this disorder.

While most children with ADHD might have their symptoms decline as they move into their teenage years, a lot will continue to have them well into adulthood. ADHD teens and adults show symptoms that are less noticeable than in children because teens and adults may have found a coping mechanism. ADHD teens are generally less hyperactive than children with the same disorder. ADHD teens tend to be more fidgety and impatient rather than hyper and disruptive. However ADHD teens still have problems with concentrating, keeping organized, and with acting impulsively.

But of course, ADHD teens and adults can still receive treatment for their disorder. Patients should consider being evaluated by a psychologist or psychiatrist who has prior experience in dealing with ADHD teens and adults. There are treatments available for them that will allow them to live a normal life. There are specialized drugs for ADHD teens and adults. But medication that has been proven to work in treating children can also work in ADHD teens and adults.

Back to articles list

Because adolescent substance abuse is a serious problem and found in many teens, studies have been conducted in order to discover what the factors leading to drug abuse are. It was found that adolescents’ opinions on drugs are very diverse and that they may vary from generation to generation. What they think about drugs is linked to how popular certain drugs are and to how frequent they are used.

The most important factors that influence adolescent substance abuse are: the level of risk that is perceived, the degree of social approval that is perceived and perceived availability. If taking a certain drug is perceived as posing high risks or as being little accepted, the probability for it to be used by adolescents is low. Teens will associate availability with social acceptance: if it is easy to obtain it must be approved socially. Therefore it will be more probable for it to be used.

The way perceptions are formed in the mind of a teen is difficult to understand. Where risks are concerned, they will have in mind several aspects: physical, emotional, social risks and risks posed on objectives. Physical risks include addiction and social risks involve conflicts with family and friends. Adolescents will also consider their objectives and how they might be affected by drug abuse. Important factors are also campaigns looking to prevent adolescent substance abuse and parental involvement.

Though teens may be informed about the risks, it is likely that they will first find out about what they may “gain” through adolescent substance abuse. Whether through media or in social groups, they will be told about states of euphoria, high energy or “numbness” that they may experience. A positive image may be formed in their mind because they are not given all the facts. It seems though that as teens are better informed on the risks posed by adolescent substance abuse the users’ percent decreases, but unfortunately very slowly.
